Tips from the first time hiking with our baby
A core memory for all of us
Long before we were expecting, Ryan and I would talk about the day we’d take our baby on their first hike. So when that moment finally came, it felt like a big milestone for all of us.
A FEW TIPS FROM US FIRST-TIMERS
Set Your Expectations
It might sound like overkill, but checking in with your own expectations before heading out can take a lot of pressure off.
We kept things pretty simple for our first outing—an easy walk in the woods with our daughter Aurora and dog, Hank. We planned to take turns baby-wearing and snapping a few photos of each other, and agreed that if things went sideways, we’d turn back without hesitation.
Pack the Essentials (and Only the Essentials)
Babies don’t exactly pack light, and it’s easy to feel like you need to bring everything. But really, you can get by with just the basics—diapers, wipes, a spare outfit, and layers to match the weather.
Don’t be Afraid to Bail
Trusting your gut is a big part of spending time outdoors—especially with a little one. Knowing when to turn around can make all the difference in how the experience goes for everyone. There will always be more opportunities.
Enjoy the Moment
Don’t forget why you’re out there. We ended up doing two short hikes that were close together—the first went well, so we kept going. We took some of our favourite photos, then made our way back to the car for snacks and a quick nursing break in the parking lot before heading back to camp.
Do It While It’s Hard
I read something online recently that stuck with me. It was about doing things again after having children. The person said, ‘Do it while it’s hard, so you’re not out of practice when it becomes easy.’ I’ve thought about this line a lot since becoming a mom. There is no perfect time to start or to get back into the things you did before, so don’t wait for the circumstances to be perfect or easy.
These were short, simple hikes—but ones we’ll never forget. It would have been easy to hang around camp all weekend and but I’m so glad we got out. If you’re thinking about taking your little one out for the first time, go for it. You won’t regret it.
