Hiking the Rummel Lake Trail

About

Open year-round, the Rummel Lake Trail is a 10 km, moderately challenging out-and-back hike in Spray Valley Provincial Park, Alberta. It features an elevation gain of approximately 430 m and typically takes around 3.5 hours to complete.

The trailhead is directly across from the access road to Mount Engadine Lodge, and parking is available along the shoulder of the highway. The trail winds through the forest until it opens up at the viewpoint, where benches offer stunning views of Spray Valley. Then, it continues upwards to Rummel Lake.

While at Mount Engadine Lodge for a friend’s wedding, we decided to test out our new child carrier, the Deuter Kid Comfort Pro. Since this hike is just across the road, it felt like the perfect opportunity. This was also our first time hiking in the winter with our daughter, who was 8 months old at the time. We stopped at the viewpoint to have lunch before heading back down, keeping her first experience in the carrier short and sweet. We're happy to report that she was pretty comfortable and even managed to sneak in an afternoon nap!

First impressions
  • Similar fit and feel to our Deuter Aircontact trekking backpacks

  • Side entry makes loading easy, while the multi-point harness keeps the baby secure

  • Additional space can be created by removing the built-in daypack and attaching it to the front chest straps

  • The kickstand can be “flipped in” so it doesn’t stick out when not in use

  • Padding around the child's face is detachable for easy washing

  • Integrated sun shade
